Thus, the figures presented herein are still provisional and may differ from the final count. Registered marriages decreased by 8.62 percent in 2023

A total of 2,174 marriages in 2023, representing an 8.62 percent decrease from 2,379 registered marriages in 2022. (Figure 1)

Surigao City recorded the highest number of registered marriages

Among the 21 city/municipalities, the highest number of registered marriages was recorded in Surigao City, with 1,460 total marriages, equivalent to 67.16 percent of the total. This was followed by the Municipality of Claver with 432 marriages or 19.87 percent and General Luna with 426 marriages or 19.60 percent. On the other hand, the Municipality of San Isidro posted the lowest number of registered marriages, with 16 marriages, contributing 0.74 percent of the total marriages in the province. (Figure 2)

Most marriages occurred in February

In 2023, the month of February recorded the highest number of registered marriages, with 376, accounting for 17.30 percent of the total marriages in the province. This translates to a daily average of 12 marriages.

April ranked second with 255 marriages (11.73 percent), followed by September with 253 marriages (11.64 percent). Meanwhile, November had the least number of registered marriages, with 86, equivalent to 3.96 percent of the total. (Figure 3)

Most marriages occur in the 25-29 age group

The highest percentage of marriages occurs in the 25-29 age group, with
34.54 percent of males and 40.66 percent of females marrying at this stage. The data also shows that more females (884) than males (751) marry within this age group, indicating that women marry earlier than men.

The 30-34 age group follows as the second most common age for marriage, with 28.56 percent of males and 23.32 percent of females marrying at this stage. The number of males (621) is higher than females (507), indicating that while women tend to marry earlier, men are more likely to marry in their early thirties.

For early marriages, a smaller percentage of individuals marry in the 15-
19 age group, with only 0.23 percent of males and 2.02 percent of females. The data shows that more females (44) than males (5) marry at

this young age, highlighting that early marriage is more common among women. (Figure 4)

On the other hand, marriage rates decline significantly after 35 years old. Only 14.03 percent of males and 8.60 percent of females marry in the 35- 39 age group. After 40, the decline continues, with only a small percentage of marriages occurring beyond this stage. By 60 years and over, the marriage rates are slight, with just 53 males and 17 females recorded. While marriage rates drop for both genders after 40, men still have a slightly higher likelihood of marrying at older ages compared to women.

Status of Registration

In terms of the status of registration in Surigao del Norte, 2,137 marriages (98.30 percent) were timely registered, and only 37 (1.70 percent) marriages were registered late. Of the total registrations in the Caraga Region, Surigao del Norte contributes 21.33 percent (2,174 out of 10,192). Among all provinces and cities in the region, Surigao del Norte ranks third in total registrations.
