Explanatory Note
Data on deaths presented in this release were obtained from the Certificates of Death (Municipal Form No. 103) that were registered at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars throughout the country and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority. This release shows an overview of the registered deaths that occurred from January to December 2023. Deaths of Filipinos that occurred abroad which were reported to the Philippine Foreign Service Posts are presented in a separate report. The figures shown were not adjusted for under registration.
An average of 10 deaths registered per day
A total of 3,698 deaths in 2023, representing a 2.99 percent decrease from 3,812 registered deaths in 2022. On average, there were 10 registered deaths per day. (Figure 1)

Highest number of deaths reported in City of Surigao
Among the 21 city/municipalities, the highest number of registered deaths by place of occurrence was recorded in Surigao City with 2,020 deaths, equivalent to 54.62 percent of the total. This was followed by the Municipality of Placer with 287 deaths place of occurrence or 7.76 percent and Municipality of Dapa with 267 deaths or 7.22 percent. On the other hand, the Municipality of Burgos reported 19 registered deaths by place of occurrence. (Figure 2)

December records the highest number of daily deaths
In 2023, the month of December had the highest number of registered deaths with 375 deaths. This corresponds to the average of 12 deaths registered per day. The month of September had the lowest number of deaths registered at 284 deaths. (Figure 3)

More male deaths than female deaths recorded
Figure 4 shows the age-sex structure of registered deaths in 2023. It shows an inverted pyramid, with fewer deaths at the younger ages, except for children under one, and progressively increasing as people grow older. In Surigao del Norte, the number of male deaths (2,029 or 54.9% share on the total deaths) was higher than female deaths (1,669 or 45.1% share on the total deaths) in 2023. The proportion of males who died was highest at the age of 65 to 69 years old (235 or 11.6% of male deaths) while for females, the highest was at the oldest age group, 85 years old and over (257 or 15.4% of female deaths).


More than half of the registered deaths were attended by health care providers
Attendant refers to a private physician, public health officer, hospital authority, or any other allied health care provider who attended the deceased.
In 2023, out of 3,698 registered deaths, 55.5 percent or 2,054 deaths were attended by a health care provider. (Figure 5)

Most deaths occurred at home
In 2023, about 50.9 percent of the total deaths occurred at home while about 48.0 percent died in health facilities.
On the other hand, 1.1 percent occurred in places other than home and health facilities, such as on the street, in public places, on board a vehicle, airplane or vessel while in transit, among others. (Figure 6)
