27 May 2025 – SURIGAO CITY. With gloves on and garbage bags in hand, PSA Surigao del Norte personnel gathered along the shores of Barangay Sabang, Surigao City, for a coastal clean-up drive that turned into a powerful display of environmental unity and action. From plastic bottles to fishing nets, every item removed helps create a cleaner, safer home for the creatures in our coastline.
There were 17 regular and office-based personnel led by Engr. Virgilio G. Avelina, Jr., officer-in-charge, collected plastic bottles, fishing nets, food wrappers, and other debris that littered the coastline. The cleanup
improved the appearance of the beach and helped protect marine life that often mistakes plastic waste for food.
Given the recent data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), between 75 and 199 million tons of plastic waste are already polluting our oceans, with 33 billion pounds of plastic entering marine environments each year. The activity was more than just a one- day effort; it was a call to action for sustainable living and responsible waste management.
