Fisheries production in Caraga dropped by 7.6 percent The fisheries production in the region dropped by 7.6 percent or about 5,040.1 metric tons from 66,601.7 metric tons in 2020 to 61,561.6 metric tons in 2021. The region’s decrease in production was mainly attributed to the output reduction of the municipal fisheries subsector by 8.4 percent. From its fisheries production of 42,866.2 metric tons in 2020, it recorded 39,281.0 metric tons of fisheries production in 2021. Further, the aquaculture subsector also showed a decrease of 7.8 percent from 14,945.0 metric tons in 2020 to 13,783.7 metric tons in 2021 while the commercial subsector declined by 3.3 percent from 8,790.5 metric tons in 2020 to 8,496.9 metric tons in 2021. (See Figure 1 and Table 1)

TECHNICAL NOTES

The Fisheries Production Survey of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) is divided into four (4) major fisheries surveys. These are the Quarterly Commercial Fisheries Survey (QCFS), Quarterly Municipal Fisheries Survey (QMFS), Quarterly Inland Fisheries Survey (QIFS) and Quarterly Aquaculture Survey (QAqS). The commercial and municipal fisheries surveys aim to provide quarterly data on volume and value of fish production by species, by region and by province. The aquaculture surveys are intended to generate quarterly data on volume and value of cultured species by environment, by type of aquafarm, by region and by province.

The survey on commercial fisheries production covered 57 provinces and cities. For municipal fisheries and aquaculture surveys 81 provinces and cities were covered.

Fisheries – all activities relating to the act or business of fishing, culturing, preserving, processing, marketing, developing, conserving, and managing aquatic resources and the fishery areas including the privilege to fish or take aquatic resources thereof (RA 8550).

Commercial Fisheries - covers fishing operations that make use of boats of more than three (3) gross tons.

Marine Municipal Fisheries - covers fishing operations carried out without the use of boat or the use of a boat of three (3) gross tons or less.

Inland Fisheries - refers to the catching of fish, crustaceans, mollusks and all other aquatic animals and plants in inland water like lakes, rivers, dams, marshes, etc.

Aquaculture - covers operations involving all forms of raising and culturing fish and other fishery species in marine, brackish, and freshwater under controlled conditions
