A.    Caraga

1.    Headline Inflation

The headline inflation for all income households in Caraga maintained its steady rate at 3.4 percent in May 2024. This brings the regional average inflation from January to May 2024 to 3.1 percent. In May 2023, the inflation rate was higher at 5.4 percent. (Table A and B and Figure 1)

Among the 13 commodity groups, the same inflation rate as the previous month’s rate was recorded in the indices of education services and financial services at 1.7 percent and -0.3 percent, respectively.

Further, the downtrend of inflation in May 2024 was mainly brought by the lower year-on-year growth rate in the food and non-alcoholic beverages index at 7.1 percent in May 2024 from 7.4 percent in the previous month. This was followed by personal care, and miscellaneous goods and services with an inflation rate of 3.8 percent from 4.6 percent in the previous month. Moreover, lower annual growth rates were reported in the indices of restaurants and accommodation services at 2.1 percent from 2.3 percent in the previous month.

Also contributing to the downtrend in inflation during the period were observed in the following commodity groups during the month:

a.    Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, 3.2 percent from 3.8 percent;
b.    Clothing and footwear, 2.8 percent from 3.1 percent; and
c.    Furnishings, household equipment, and routine household maintenance, 2.1 percent from 2.5 percent.

In contrast, higher inflation rates were observed in the following commodity groups during the month:

a.    Housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels, -3.4 percent from -3.6 percent;
b.    Health, 1.8 percent from 1.3 percent;
c.    Transport, 1.1 percent from 0.3 percent;
d.    Information and communication, 1.8 percent from 1.7 percent; and
e.    Recreation, sport, and culture, 5.0 percent from 4.9 percent.

2.    Food Inflation

Food inflation for all income households at the regional level decelerated to 7.5 percent in May 2024, from 7.6 percent in April 2024. In May 2023, food inflation was lower at 6.4 percent.

The deceleration of the food commodity inflation in May 2024 was mainly brought about by the lower year-on-year growth rate observed in the food group of cereals and cereal products at 21.8 percent from 23.7 percent in the previous month. The main contributor to the deceleration of the cereals and cereal products food group was the slow growth rate of the rice index, at 27.6 percent from 30.1 percent. This was followed by the food group of milk, other dairy products, and eggs with an inflation rate of 4.0 percent from 5.4 percent in the previous month. Moreover, the food groups that also contributed lower annual growth rates are also observed in sugar, confectionery, and desserts, which recorded at -8.2 percent during the month from -7.7 percent in April 2024. (Table D)

On the other hand, higher annual growth rates were noted in the indices of the following food groups:

a.    Meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals, -1.0 percent from -2.0 percent;
b.    Fish and other seafood, -0.9 percent from -1.2 percent;
c.    Fruits and nuts, 8.2 percent from 7.6 percent;
