RSC recognizes the success of Caraga’s NSM celebration

Caraga’s Regional Statistics Committee (RSC) has recognized the success of the recently concluded 30th National Statistics Month (NSM) celebration in October 2019. The accomplishment of this year’s celebration was presented through an Audio-Visual Presentation during the fourth quarter RSC meeting on November 4, 2019 at Luciana Convention Center, Butuan City.

Atty. Bonifacio G. Uy, RSC Chairperson and National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Caraga Regional Director, commended the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), committee members, Local Government Units (LGUs), government agencies and all partner agencies for their active participation and support to the different activities in line with the 30th NSM celebration.

Various activities across the region were conducted in support to the 30th NSM celebration. PSA hosted the 30th NSM Opening Ceremony on October 9, 2019 at Robinsons Place Butuan, with the theme “Data Innovation: Key to a Better Nation.”

In her welcome remarks, Dr. Rosalinda C. Apura, PSA Caraga Regional Director, said that “In the age of data revolution, we and our users do not only depend on administrative reports, surveys and censuses results but had explored the use of citizen-generated data and big data through data gardening and web-scoping to support their data needs”. She mentioned that this year’s theme is timely as we manage our data ecosystems in the changing data landscape.

The opening ceremony underscored the importance of the Census of Population and Housing in the Changing Data Landscape. Chief Statistical Specialist Guillermo M. Lipio who was the resource speaker discussed the objectives, uses, and importance of census data.

“Allocation of resources and revenues is one of the important uses of census data”, he said. Census data is also used for the formulation of policies and plans concerning various segments of the population, he added.

Other highlights during the opening ceremony were the contests on Best Display of Statistical Practices Using Infographics, and the Stats and Ladders.

Caraga State University (CSU) won champion for the Best Display of Statistical Practices Using Infographics contest while Ms. Mariel Makinano of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Caraga was declared champion in the Stats and Ladders contest.

The 30th NSM Closing Ceremony was held on October 25, 2019 at Balanghai Hotel and Convention Center, Butuan City. Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) hosted the event.

The 13th Inter-Agency and LGU Statistics Quiz was the highlight of the program. After the 3-round quiz, the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Caraga Region Campus was declared champion. It was followed by the Department of Education (DepEd) as second placer and Agusan del Norte Electric Cooperative (ANECO) as third placer.

Among other activities for the month-long celebration include the Press Conference, Data Storytelling, Lecture on the Basic Concepts of Census and Population and Housing, 5th Inter-High School Statistics Quiz, Data Cartooning, and other statistical activities conducted by the provinces.
