PSA with DOLE kicks off 32nd National Statistics Month celebration

Hosted by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), the 32nd National Statistics Month (NSM) celebration in Caraga region kicked off with a virtual Opening Ceremony on 11 October 2021 via Zoom. This was attended by one hundred (100) participants from the different agencies including the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) regional and provincial offices, DOLE, Regional Statistics Committee (RSC), and tri-media.

Regional Director Rosalinda C. Apura of PSA welcomed the participants to the virtual conduct of the 32nd NSM Opening Ceremony with the theme, “NSM@32: Revving up for Economic and Social Recovery Through Evidence-Based Policies”.

In her opening message, Regional Director Priscilla R. Sonido of NEDA underscored the use and importance of statistics in the formulation of policies, planning, and decision-making for both government and private sector.

Keynote speaker DOLE Secretary Bello III said: “The department has always relying on research and statistics in determining labor market trends and issues and on implementing data-driven and evidence-based policies and programs. Thus, labor statistics has significant role on the achievement of decent work for all the appropriate programs for job creation, better working condition, work-life balance, and assistance for vulnerable groups.”

Moreover, Assistant Secretary Dominique Rubia-Tutay of DOLE gave updates on the national employment recovery strategy. She informed the participants about the “expanded trabaho, negosyo, at kabuhayan initiatives” of the government. This is in consideration of the changes in the labor market brought by the pandemic.

Another highlight of the event was the awarding of the Best LGU Advocate for Statistics. RD Apura awarded the plaque of recognition to the Provincial Local Government Unit of Dinagat Islands. The provincial government was recognized for their support in advocating statistics and promoting its use in planning and policy making.

The event was concluded with closing remarks delivered by Chief Statistical Specialist Melchor B. Bautista of PSA. He commended and thanked DOLE Caraga for hosting the 32nd NSM Opening Ceremony in the region. CSS Bautista also mentioned and acknowledged the support of the RSC members and all the participants.

The NSM is an annual celebration and was first observed in 1990 pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647 signed by then President Corazon C. Aquino on September 20, 1990, “Declaring the Month of October of Every Year as the National Statistics Month”.

The annual NSM celebration aims to: a) promote, enhance, and instill awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics to the different sectors of the society; and b) elicit the cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading

the quality and standards of statistics in the country. (Contributed by: Presa P. Villarina, PSA RSSO XIII)
